Formerly the popular Ruby Cantonese restaurant, Bengal Cottage is a large restaurant on the outskirts of Burton, near the Pirelli Stadium. It had only been open two weeks when we visited, so the car park was deserted. Nevertheless, we were met with a warm welcome and shown to a large round table. The décor was modern with predominantly black and white furnishings, which made the whole restaurant look very smart. Menu wise, comprehensive but not as dauntingly huge as some Indian restaurants. The prices too were also on the whole very reasonable, even the special mains less than £10. Obviously with a new restaurant visit you have to go for the full Indian restaurant experience, and the poppadom and sides was an impressive start, generous portions of mango chutney, lime pickle, chilli pickle and fresh onions. Starters wise a good variety, but I went for the Yuk Sung, traditionally a dish of Chinese restaurant, but given a fantastic Indian spiced twist, chicken, mixed veg and noodles, in a large lettuce leaf, a fantastic starter, and probably my favourite dish. My friends went for the fiery Chilli Murghi Niblets, another good starter. Mains wise, all the traditional curries were present Balti, Jalfrezi, Bhuna etc. I went for the Bengal Special, a fabulously spicy and flavoursome dish, that got warmer as you ate it, accompanied with a generous portion of special rice and a special Paratha. My friends had one of the sizzler specials and a Balti. All of the dishes were very generous, both in their fillings and size. We were all thoroughly full at the end. Complementary lollipops and After-eights, followed the meal. The service was superb and the meal was first class, we will definitely return very soon. Pity the restaurant was so empty, only two other people, in the entire time we were there, food this good needs to be tried by everyone!

I hate to break the run of 5 stars but i think its just not as good as a few other Indian restaurants in Burtonyet.! they have only been open a few weeks so I hope the proprietors have a look at these review sites and take comments and compliments on board. The interior and seating is pleasant enough, obviously a new enterprise cannot invest too much money to begin with, but the interior felt slightly dated despite the new style of restaurant in this unit. The service was excellent, very genuine and attentive. The staff were polite and helpful when it came to making recommendations. We had poppadoms and pickles as a pre-starter, i concur with the previous reviewer that the range of pickles was very generous and probably led to slight over-eating so early into the meal! ;)
As a starter I had a vegetarian Paneer shashlik, which was presented impeccably for such a cheap simple dish. Lovely fresh salad and a sizzling platter enough for two to comfortably share. As we struggled to decide on mains we had one Balti main and three mains made as side dishes to share, accompanied with a paratha and rice. Each dish had a very distinct flavour of its own and complimented the others without being too samey. Our only critisim was the oiliness of the curry. It was noticable on the plates and whilst the small dishes were on the hotplates the oil separated out leaving a bit of a slick. It is disappointing because it makes you realise how unhealthy what youre eating actually is ! |I like to be able to tuck in and enjoy my meal without thinking of how many miles i'm going to have to run to burn it off ;) After the meal we were very impressed with the treats after eights, lollies, orange segments, baileys the offer of complimentary coffee. plus a rose!!! haha. trying very hard but not over the top. We did have to wait for quite a while for the bill to come, but as the restaurant establishes itself hopefully the pacing will be slightly better judged. Overall, fantastic service, good range of different dishes, some unique dishes, lovely sincere staff, with a few tweaks this place has the potential to do really well in Burton.
