I've passed their Goodge St location on my lunch break at work many a times, but never had a reason to go in. After a day out at the British Museum and lunch, we sought out coffee and cake to refuel our depleted sugar reserves. We happened to pass this Candy Cakes location, and I'd found my reason to go. Like the other reviewers before me have stated, the looks sucked me in like a magnet!

But looks can be deceiving. The guy behind the counter was just plain rude and short (but he may have been an anomoly as the other girl was super nice). I felt anxious to hurry up and pick something as seating was going fast - well to be honest, there wasn't much seating in the first place. I chose the lemon poppy seed cupcake and an Americano, and my boyfriend got a slice of pecan pie with a latte.

Yeah, it's pretty much a gloried muffin. I didn't care much for the icing, and I had no complaints about the the lemon poppy seed cupcake. It was moist and delicious! The pecan pie was TOO sugary. We probably filled our sugar quota for the entire week. And I don't know about the latte, but my Americano was waaaaay too bitter.

It's all kitschy and cute on the outside, but WAY overpriced! Our bill came to 12 squigglies, not worth it! Next time I'll just go for a chocolate bar!

Cakes from Candy Cakes are like Nu Rave versions of Hummingbird's. They come in the craziest colours and the decorations are extremely garish.

I was quite horrified at the thought of having to eat one when my friend brought a virtually neon-glowing boxful round one evening, but despite the fact that the glossy icing makes them look like they're made out of plastic, they do taste OK. Too sweet, sickly and quite dry for my taste though and they're muffin sized rather than cute cupcakes so all a bit too diabetes inducing. I looked on the website to see where on earth (if at all) she had found them and apparently they don't use any artificial colourings, additives or preservatives, so they aren't actually as bad as they look.

Some of the decorations are so tacky you've just got to laugh. Next time (if there is a next time) I'm going to try turning the lights off to see if they glow in the dark.

As a lover of minimalism this place kind of gives me the creeps. First impressions lead to believe that you have reached the amazing land of Willy Wonka's chocolate factory, but then you get a closer look and everything just looks so fake and tacky, it might just make you shudder.

The coloured cupcakes look as though if you were to drop one it would bounce right up. How they actually pride themselves in using only natural ingredients is beyond belief!

They actually even sell gluten-free versions... wonder what that tastes like.

From the seafoam green façade to my very first taste of Candy Cakes' delightful treats, this bakery made my heart skip a beat! Featuring cool and quirky cupcakes with names like Techno Mouse, Toffee Fudge and Strawberry Sundae. Unless you are a person who can exercise self restraint, much unlike myself, I highly caution you bring a friend along when entering this bakery.

I visited Candy Cakes with a friend of mine from college. When we entered the bakery, we felt like little kids again. Suddenly, it was OK point
and ohh and ahh over the pretty decorations and not be shy enough to lick the icing off of our hands in public. If you don't fancy cupcakes, Candy Cakes also has a great selection of gelatos and fresh pastries served daily.

This amazing little cake shop made me feel like a little kid again with pig tails in my hair and scuffed knees. The outside is so inviting and it reminded me of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory with the incredibly coloured cakes and sweets.
The iced muffins are really tasty and are around £3 if you want to eat in which I didn't thik was abd when you think of the prices chain coffee shops charge for cakes and muffins and they don't taste half as delicious as these ones. I love the individuality of the little shop and it seems to attract kids and adults alike.
I will definately be going back here becuase it's just so cute!

No - we said 'cupcake the size of your fist in the most fantastic colours you ever saw all your life'
These cakes oh my and the fillings well I can barely type for drooling but here's one cake's description from the website:


This golden cake seduces you with a Toffee and Banana sponge base, tops it with caramel icing and then shows off its geometric side with a rectangle of delicious fudge. Magnifico!


I mean what? It's heaven. Real heaven on earth.


I really, really wish I could give this place 5*'s but, unfortunately, I must knock one off for the price of the cakes (£2.60 per cake they're darn good, but when you could get a muffin of the same size in Sainsbury for 50p, it kinda puts it into perspective) and the fact that the other food they serve (I was trying to be sensible and had a baguette for lunch one day, thinking that a cupcake for lunch is just absurd) is far from good. In fact, it's bad. But the freshly squeezed orange juice and the cakes themselves make up for that in a huge way.

I was trying to waste some time in Covent Garden last week with my 3 year old.
I spied this place from the top of the steps and HAD to and have a look!
They have the most wonderful looking cakes (iced muffins!) in the window. My daughters eyes lit up! So we went in.


She got one with a lolly pop on top.
To be honest, she ate that n left the rest of it! So obviously i had to eat it myself! ;o)
It was delicious. At £2.95 eat in, it wasnt cheap, but it was HUGE.
I loved the decor too, pistachio coloured walls and pink stools. Very cute!
Will def pay a visit on my next trip!

Chieh T pointed Candy Cakes out to the Yelp Dining gang last Saturday when we were wandering round Covent Garden after our meal at Ba Shan.

Full marks for the exciting shop window. Bright colours, well decorated cupcakes and cute awning makes it feel exciting and draws you in to have a further peek.

However, as we were quite full and therefore had a more discerning foodie critical eye, I looked beyond the bright colours and noted that the cakes looked good but the colours did look artificially garish and the icing looked rather hard rather than the soft buttery cream icing I prefer.

I had to return to try one out of Yelp duty and it tasted as it looked - rather artificial, over-sweet and hard icing. Maybe some enjoy their cupcakes this way but not the right taste for me

The first time I saw Candy Cakes I thought I was in paradise. What a genius idea to make the much loved cupcake even better by topping it with sweeties from my childhood. Surely blending these two treats together could only result in even more deliciousness.
Tasty x tasty must = tasty squared?! What's not to like?

Well, two fairly important things actually.
1) The taste. Dry. Bland. Like eating a sponge. A crumbly sponge that has been left out in the sun for a while and then topped with clay instead of icing. Seriously DISAPPOINTING.
2) The price. £2.60 for 1 cupcake?! These things must cost pennies to make and if they're not delivering on the flavour then how can they justify the price?

I bet even after reading these reviews some of you will still be lured in to Candy Cakes. Like a moth to the flame it's hard to avoid wanting to try something that looks so good. Stay strong, walk by, grab a chocolate bar nearby if you must, just don't go in here. You might as well just chew on cotton wool and drop your money on the street instead.

Difficult for me to buck the trend of reviews for Candy Cakes on Monmouth street, it's as crap as they all say. After so long of nearly enticing me on a number of occasions with their decorative window display - some truly scrumptious looking examples of fine cakery behind the drool-proof, recently wiped clean sheet of glass, I finally succumbed. As good as they do indeed look, leave it there. Don't ruin the illusion. It's too late for me but keep this Candy Cakes shop in some dreamlike haven in the back of your mind somewhere. Once you take that first, regretful step inside, the dream dies. Proper dies, like a professional hit in which there's a ruthless killer, void of emotion with his boot to your throat and the barrel of a cold and particularly clinical looking gun pointing at your face and you're asked "any last words?".

Those words are, of course, "I'll take those ones, please". Bugger! I've ruined it now.

The problems started before a bite was taken, before I'd even left the shop. As I handed a note (£10) in payment for the thingamajig and whatchamacallit flavoured fairy cakes I was told "we don't have any change. Or fivers". Brilliant. "Right, I have no change either, so how do you want to do this?". For around 20 seconds (a surprisingly long and enduring time when one is waiting for a solution) the two young girls working behind the counter decided the best thing to do would be to twine their hair around their fingers. That's it luvvie, twiddle your hair at the empty till, that'll sort it out.

Now, I'm not going to entirely blame these two younglings. Yes, they are the staff and yes, they are a little inept and seemingly indifferent to the difficulties facing them but someone has hired them and left them both here with little guidance and (almost literally) no money to work with, aside from higher denomination notes. In an area of town like this, they'll need all the help they can get. Quite a thoughtless, kamikaze approach to business management.

Eventually, one of the girls scraped enough change together (well, close enough) from her own purse in the hope that some small change may soon come her way. This shouldn't be happening in any shop let alone a well known and, apparently, popular one.

Next came the delayed, wanting enjoyment of eating the said fairy cakes. To dry to enjoy. Though the sugar rush from the butter-cream was nice (just nice!) and the ideas for flavours were interesting, in practise they fell short. Hardly a big outlay but still more than you would expect to pay for what's received. More expensive than a church bake sale hosted by the local parish grannies and not as good, I'm afraid.

With such all round insouciance there can be little wonder why this place has received such poor ratings from so many.

Still tempted to try a proper cake from them but another experience like my last should serve me as a sound warning.
