Road Trip Milkshakes
No better way to spice up a day on the road than a satisfying milkshake made the old-fashioned way. Here are some great shakes we've encountered on West vacation trips.

L'avis 5 étoiles de David I love milkshakes, and had read some good reviews about ice cream shop Cowlicks, so was anxious to stop by while in Fort Bragg. We arrived at a good time, for soon the line was almost out the door - obviously word gets around about this place - which we took as a good sign. I'm particularly a fan of coffee milkshakes, and Cowlicks had 4 different varieties! The girl that took our order was very helpful, pointing out "The Caffinator" was their most popular coffee shake, so I tried that. Ah - it was wonderful, possibly the best coffee shake I have ever had, a mix of coffee and coffee ice cream that was delicious. My sons had Jersey Cows, basically Chocolate Peanut Butter shakes, using real peanut butter (not peanut butter syrup), again giving the shakes a rich, peanutty taste. My wife had the Creamsicle, a blend of vanilla ice cream and orange juice, and it did taste just like the same-named ice cream bar. Wish we lived closer, this would be a regular haunt. Definitely a must-visit for shake lovers in the Mendocino / Fort Bragg area! -
L'avis 4 étoiles de David As part of my Great Milkshake Quest, while vacationing in Reno I had to stop by Scooper's in nearby Sparks as a result of the reviews on yelp. Driving into this old-fashioned 50s drive-in felt like going back in time: you could order outside from your car! Our progress came to an abrupt halt, and our mouths dropped open, as we stared at the amazing milkshake menu: 43 milkshake varieties! Fortunately there was no one behind us because it took a few minutes to choose. I had the Peanut Butter shake and my wife had the Hot Fudge milkshake. The shakes were thick and delicious, quite rich and flavorful. For those like me that like to drink your shake through a straw, these are a bit too thick for that, so you may need to be patient and let it melt down a little. My wife likes to watch her calories, but finished every drop of her shake! We tried several shakes while in the Reno area, but none came close to Scooper's. Wish I was local and could have the chance to try all the flavors! -
L'avis 4 étoiles de David If you love burgers, shakes and classic diner atmosphere, Cool Cat Cafe is the place for you. We stopped by for a quick shake and some fries after some downtown San Luis Obispo shopping. Cool Cat Cafe Is located outside of the downtown hustle and bustle, and its nicely sized free parking lot was a sight for sore eyes! There's not a huge variety of shakes, but I had never had a mint chocolate chip shake, so I opted for that and was not disappointed. Great minty taste, and though I'm not a big add-ins lover for shakes, the chocolate chips were quite small and not a problem. My wife had a delicious chocolate shake, and chose Nutela chocolate syrup to go with it. (As an avid milkshake lover I have had shakes in dozens of places, but this is the first instance I've seen of giving a customer their choice of syrup.) The milkshakes came in a glass, with an amazingly generous bonus milkshake in a tin on the side. There was enough to fill the glass container three times. No stinting on the shakes here! The fries were also excellent, covered with a tasty barbecue seasoning. Great 50s diner atmosphere, not worn and tired like some diners, but fairly new, clean and sparkling. A James Dean wall display had the original newspaper article covering his car crash death, which incredibly occurred just outside Paso Robles. To top things off, our server was friendly, upbeat and enthusiastic. We couldn't ask for more! -
L'avis 4 étoiles de David Best milkshakes I had in West Yellowstone hands down. Start with chocolate or vanilla, and then create your own combination. We tried Chocolate/Peanut Butter shakes, Chocolate/Oreo and Chocolate/Brownie shakes: all were outstanding. Also excellent was the turtle caramel fudge ice cream in a waffle bowl. Mixed verdict on the buffalo burgers: two of us liked them, the other two felt they were nothing special. The service was quick and attentive. Great place, and really hopping and busy with a nice energy when we stopped by in the early evening. The deserts were so good we made a special effort to return before our vacation ended! -
L'avis 5 étoiles de David One of my father's first jobs was creating milkshakes in a downtown Chicago restaurant. He passed that love of milkshakes on to me, and I in turn, have passed that on to my family. Needless to say, we love to discover new milkshake haunts on our travels. The Sno-Flake drive-in in South Lake Tahoe, a local favorite since 1961, was one of our great discoveries. An old-fashioned drive-in, mostly featuring burgers, fries and shakes, it can be wildly popular with lines at peak times. But the shakes were worth the wait! I've had milkshakes in dozens of places, and although it's easy to make a good milkshake, it's surprisingly rare to find a great milkshake. Sno-Flake drive-in makes great milkshakes; in fact they've won the "Best of Tahoe Milkshakes" award for a number of years. They have a good variety of milkshakes to choose from: Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry, Chocolate Chip, Coffee, Boysenberry, Oreo, Peanut Butter, Heath Bar, Butterfinger, Mini M&M, Snickers, Kit Kat. Their milkshakes are amongst the few I would call "memorable" - I especially recall the Peanut Butter shake my son had - it was simply perfect. Alas, my memories of Sno-Flake are somewhat bittersweet because circumstances prevented my returning to have a Peanut Butter shake for myself. Returning here for their shakes is a top priority next time I am in South Lake Tahoe! -
L'avis 4 étoiles de David We stopped here for lunch on vacation. My wife had a hamburger, which she enjoyed. I had the chicken sandwich, and although the chicken was good, the experience was not that great because of something in the sandwich that had a chewy skin, perhaps some under cooked bacon. My fries however were fantastic, the best I've had in a long time, perfectly cooked with a slight crispiness on the outside. We were most surprised by the milkshakes: outstanding shakes, worth returning for in and of themselves. I had the caramel shake, and my wife had a chocolate/caramel combination. Both were five-star milkshakes, the type where you know you're in the presence of a great taste sensation after the first sip. Perfect blend of drinkability through a straw and thickness. Flavors: vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, caramel, oreo freeze. The dining atmosphere is very pleasant, with a view of the lake. So a 3-star for the food, upgraded for the great shake and fries. -
L'avis 4 étoiles de David We made the mistake of asking the Carmel bed and breakfast proprietor if he knew of any good milkshake places in the area. Carmel dining was more upscale than that, was his rather haughty reply. Well, for those of you that don't mind a good burger, hot sandwich and excellent milkshakes, there is in fact somewhere to go in Carmel: R.G. ("real good") Burgers. Located in Carmel's Crossroads shopping center just off Highway 1, this place is a real find. The hamburgers are high quality, with a lot of combinations to choose from. My bacon cheeseburger ($8.95) to was excellent. If you don't like burgers, there's a number of hot sandwich choices as well: my wife's Eggplant Melt was quite tasty. I had great seasoned fries on the side; we figured there is a bit of cheese in the seasoning, which sounds strange, but the result is delicious. However, it's worth coming here just for the milkshakes. For $4.95 you get a LOT of milkshake: it comes in a large tin with a separate glass, so you could easily split it with another person. My wife had the Chocolate Raspberry shake, which was outstanding, plus it was a flavor I had never seen before. My Chocolate Peanut Butter shake was also great, although be warned, they use chunky peanut butter. With 20+ milkshake flavors (see photo for complete list), made with rich Dreyer's ice cream, R.G.'s may have the best milkshakes in Carmel. Lunch was not cheap here, about $30 for two, but definitely reasonable for Carmel. So for those that don't need a constant diet of "upscale dining", R.G. Burgers awaits! -
L'avis 4 étoiles de David Penngrove? Bay Area resident for over 30 years and I'd never heard of this town. But if you like great burgers and shakes it's worth a visit to Superburger in Penngrove. The place is on the small side, but they have a variety of counter seating, small tables and a few larger tables for families. For a diner it had good atmosphere and was a pleasant eating enviroment. The burgers were excellent: the charbroiled cheeseburger and the Montecito burger were great choices, perfectly cooked with quality buns. If you're a milkshake fan it's worth coming just for the shakes. They are good size, and you get a bonus tin on the side. I had the chocolate malt shake, one son had a chocolate peanut butter combination and the other had butterscotch. My wife had an interesting one: a combo pineapple coconut shake, which tasted like a piña colada without alcohol! Well-made, just the right thickness so they were still sippable, and very tasty. Plus extra points for 18 shake flavors (see photo for list). Great shakes and burgers - super, indeed!
