Extremely pedestrian food but relaxed environment to have a beer. Waitstaff very pleasant. Went through a lengthy discourse about banana pudding and why 99% of the restaurants who serve it don't really understand that good banana pudding has lots of banana slices and a sufficient amount of vanilla wafers and not just pudding. He assured me that I wouldn't be disappointed to the point of asking a floor manager in my presence about the ingredients. So I ordered it and guess what? One banana slice and maybe a couple of wafers. Completely baffled. Didn't bother sending it back but thought about it. Friends steal salad was equally disappointing. Just a big chunk of beef sitting in the middle of a huge bowl of salad. My ribs were mostly fat vice meat. Maybe Texans enjoy food like this but it's not what either of us are accustomed to. We had thought about going to The Palm or the Steakhouse across the street before entering this particular restaurant but said "what the hay." It looks like a local place and we should give it a shot. Like I said, waitstaff and environment was fun but wouldn't return.

Went here on a recent trip to Dallas (Go Cowboys!!). We were looking around for a reasonable steak/Texas dining experience without spending $50/person just for a steak. We settled on Hoffbrau Steaks and were happy we did.
Great little place downtown, easy to park and easy to find. Greeted and seated immediately. It was Monday night and they changed the channel to MNF for us as well. The place was not packed but nearly every table was full. Our waiter (Keith) came over and took our drink order. I was leaning towards a Margarita and he suggested one that was actually a dollar less than what I was looking at (no upselling, just honesty). It was pretty damn good - I had two.
Appetizers were great - fried okra that was out of this world and squash puppies (think hush puppies made from squash). We agreed thaty we could have been happy ordering 2-3 more orders of those appetizers, but we had dinner on its way.
Keith gave us a full rundown on the menu and what he suggested. Gave my fiance a very good tutorial on the different steaks on the menu. She ended up choosing the smoked sirloin (house special). I had the cowboy cut bone-in ribeyew with mac n cheese. The food was AMAZING. Mac n cheese was creamy, finished in the oven and just delicious without being too heavy. Steaks were juicy, tasty, and most important - cooked EXACTLY how we ordered them.
Dessert: I had to order two - Peach cobbler and Banana Pudding with nilla wafers. First the cobbler was delicious and my fiance's favorite. Fresh peaches and a homemade crust. The Banana pudding blew my mind. It was more of a custard than pudding. Definitley made in houe. The Nilla wafers crumbled on top just made it that much better. I wanted to lick my plate it was that good.
Highly recommend this place - great service, great food, good value. Our bill for 4 people was only $170ish including tip. We all had at least 1 bar drink or beer. -

I've never tried Hoffbrau before until this past Monday night. I went because my company had a dinner there. It was outstanding. I got to try a variety of their food: dr pepper chicken, chicken fried chicken, their shrimp, and their delicious banana pudding. The server was Daniel and he was FANTASTIC! He is what makes any place, I'm sure, amazing. Food was great, service was great, atmosphere was great.
If you are looking for a place to go in Dallas that is in the West End this is the place to try out. In case you are wondering, they do have a bar, I just did not utilize it that time. -

I met a friend here for lunch and was very excited...all for nothing. For it to be lunch time our food was surprisingly slow. I ordered the ribeye medium and it came out well-done so I had to send it back. I didn't complain, just requested a new steak to go. They comped my entire meal and gave me free dessert. The spicey black-eyed pees were good and the banana pudding was yummy. Almost as good as mine. The steak...OMG. I'm not sure how they prepare them but it tasted so artificial. It was beige in color with the perfect grill marks. The flavor and texture of the steak was horrible. The food was free and I was still disappointed. I might go back and order anything besides steak.

Not "Texas" margaritas. My review would have been a four had it not been for our waiter and the margaritas. We asked if they were made with lime juice. He said yes and we ordered two. They are actually made from a margarita mix that doesn't taste like lime juice margaritas and leaves an aftertaste.
We had other issues with our waiter too like the fact that he didn't mention the Valentine special (which was essentially what we ordered only we didn't figure that out until later when our bill was much higher than it would have been with the special) and he brought our check before we could even order dessert. It wasn't busy but it was like he was ready for us to leave and we were all actually in a great mood for Valentines.
We called ahead and were seated as soon as we walked in the door. The hostess and the food were really good. We ordered peppered sirloin, chicken fried steak, baked potato, sweet potato, mac n cheese, fried okra, fried pickles and salad. The banana pudding alone is worth going back for! -

I can't believe i just ate shrimp inside a jalapeno pepper wrapped in bacon, doused with Dr. Pepper BBQ sauce -- only in TX! That's the Sweetwater Shrimp and I got the platter, which included a soup or salad (I chose a dynamite chili) and a side"winder" (I opted for fried okra).
We started with Tito's Cherry Limeade -- the vodka was so smooth that I didn't realize it was an alcoholic beverage until the waiter asked if we wanted another one and I asked if there were free refills :) Nice drink with a kick and good flavor, but you have to like lime (and vodka, apparently).
Service and ambiance were stellar; I felt like I was in a texas roadhouse. The portions are massive -- my friend took home half of his full rack of ribs.
The dessert selections sounded great -- especially the homemade banana pudding -- but we didn't have any room left.
It's conveniently located on Market Street in the West End, right off the DART and near the more touristy spots like Hooters, Hard Rock Cafe, and Dick's Last Resort -- but tucked away nicely enough that you don't feel like you're in a tourist trap. There seem to be some good, reasonably priced lunch specials, too.
I'm glad we chose this place. -

My siblings and I came here after wandering around downtown Dallas for a bit.
We got the No Bull Mushrooms, roadhouse burgers, and the Gentleman's cut (hehe) pepper smoked sirloin. Oh and the banana pudding.
The mushrooms were surprisingly light for something that was fried, but was overkill with the ranch dressing. It would have been better with a remoulade or something that had some kick. My roadhouse burger hit the spot...I did want a burger after all. You could actually taste the Dr. Pepper Sauce, which was pretty interesting, but the bacon in the burger made everything taste like bacon. Don't get me wrong, I love me some bacon, but when you get a sandwich that is toting Dr. Pepper Sauce, you kinda want to taste the sauce. It was still pretty good. Hit the spot. The sirloin was pretty good. The pepper crust certainly had a decent amount of flavor, but it probably would have been even better Medium Rare. Banana pudding is pretty hard to screw up, and Hoffbrau's banana pudding is pretty decent.
Overall, it was ok. When I went there, the service was pretty good (we had a waiter named Chris). If I find myself back in that direction, I probably would look for somewhere else to eat, but eating at Hoffbrau's wasn't a bad experience. The prices weren't that bad, and the food wasn't that bad either.
