It was a classic JG meal: started with a bloody bull and quickly moved on to a chili bowl with hand cut diced cheddar and red onions, followed by the main event, a bacon cheeseburger. Topped it all off with an apple sour cream walnut pie. Service was also top-notch, so it pains me to dock this review by one star for the cash-only policy. In this day and age of mobile payment services, digital currencies and contactless payments it is a real bummer to literally run-around in search of an ATM in the middle of winter, while your boss and colleagues are waiting to get back to the office. Again, the food and service is great, so JG's payment policy is the single thing that keeps us from coming back on a regular basis.

Best spot in Manhattan for burgers. Request Bobby for your server, he is the man. Soup, drinks, and apps are also spectacular. Try the bullshot or bloody bull for your new favorite drink.

Best burgers and chili in the city, hands down! They are open until 4am, so it's a great spot for a post night out snack. The signature drink is the "Bloody Bull", a bloody mary with beef broth. It is highly recommended, especially as a recovery drink the day after a night out! Expect a wait as the place is small and extremely popular. Accept no imitations, this is THE burger is place in the city.

Good God, these burgers are fantastic. The bartenders are always great and friendly.
They don't talk to loudly about it, but they serve a drink that I've never seen served anywhere else: the Bloody Bull. Nuff said. -

Simply put, the best burger in town. Go medium rare, onion, tomato, extra pickles + well-done cottage fries. Grab a Bloody Bull (Bloody Mary with beef stock, their specialty) from Faisel at the bar on Saturdays while you wait for a table. It's always going to be crowded, so hang up your coat, make way for the burgers flying out from the kitchen, and put on some Stones B-sides on the jukebox. Cash only.

Don't come here for the surprisingly satisfying Bloody Bulls (a Bloody Mary but with beef broth, whaaaaat) or the flavorful cottage fries or even the cheeseburgers which are so seriously succulent that this Saturday night visit was our second in a matter of weeks...come here to meet Frank.
Stumbled in with a truly prodigious hangover at around 10pm yesterday for some hair of the dog and much-needed calories and Frank, the bartender, greeted us like we were old friends. Revived by alcohol and food, we would have had a good time anyway, but Frank enhanced our whole night with his Irish charisma and mad skills behind the bar. I only wish we had sat at the bar instead of the dining room last time we were here.
There's something about watching someone who is just SO good at what they do, who can manage a packed bar with cheerful aplomb and still make you feel like you're the only couple in the place, that makes an experience truly special. We had a blast.
Will definitely be back for more. But only if Frank's on duty. -

Best burger on planet earth. If I was on death row, my last meal would be a bacon cheeseburger, medium rare with cottage fries and a bloody bull from Melons. Making myself hungry writing this review.

If people are matching this up against the best burgers they've ever had, then Melon's might well fall short. Melon's is a classic UES institution. It's the atmosphere that makes this place and the faces that you remember from years past. This is the first time I ever had a Bloody Bull, which is like a bloody mary but they use beef stock instead of clamato juice.
The burger is small and well cooked, and the circular fries are great. Is this the most amazing burger ever? No. Would I come to NYC for this burger? No. But would I happily spend hours at the bar laughing and eating with friends I just made? Absolutely. -

Absolutely love this place- JGs has the best burger in town.
This is our go to place for a nice casual dinner or late night snack, once you get past the huge crowds at dinner time- the key is to come on an off night or later in the evening so you don't have to wait too long.
Start yourself off with one of their famous Bloody Mary's or if you're feeling adventurous a Bloody Bull (the aforementioned Bloody Mary with beef broth). Their draught beers are always fresh and ice cold too.
The Bacon Cheeseburgers are perfect in both beef and turkey, especially topped with grilled onions. The cottage fries (like french fried potato chips) make a great side.
Aside from the burgers, my boyfriend's a huge fan of the Steak Tartare (served with a salad and toast). It's probably upwards of a pound of meat, just as good as any steakhouse or French restaurant. The portion is so gigantic, the waitresses make it a point to let him know just how big it is before hand, even though he's gotten it multiple times.
The servers' attitudes typically range from attentive to mildly apathetic, depending on how crowded it is. Either way, the food usually comes out pretty quick once you get seated and is well worth the wait for a table. -

The burger is one of the best in the city, it is also great value. The bowl of chilli is very good too. The food can come out a bit quick and it sometimes feels like they are rushing you out of the place.
The bloody bull is my favourite cocktail, bloody mary with beef stock. -

I have always tried to view my life, on a day-to-day basis, as something I might write a book about later. This is not to say that my life is so extraordinary that is necessarily requires a book be written about it (far from it), but it is a nice prism through which one can go about their personal journey. I suppose this is why many of my reviews walk the line between a review and a story - I would like to view my Yelp account as a documentation of my early years in New York, and thusfar, it has served quite nicely in that respect.
With that in mind, I always try to live my days as something out of a novel from the Americana period, a Vonnegut, a Fitzgerald, a Salinger, etc. I would love Holden Caulfield more than any character on earth if he weren't such a lazy, entitled whiner about the whole thing. But I digress.
In life, there are certain places that lend themselves to whistful reminiscence - the sort of places that you take grainy photos of and show to your kids. Think along the lines of your parents leaning on their old mustard-colored BMW 2002 in a tattered polo and khaki shorts - cross-processed and faded with age.
Which brings me to JG Melon, which looks very much like the backdrop of one of the aforementioned kind of photos. The patronage is meager by the time my friends and I duck in and grab the table in the front corner. It's usually packed at dinner I'm told - the line running out the door. Back when I was first introduced to J.G. Melon, we skipped the wait in favor of the bar as he nonchalantly pointed out all the somebodies everybody treated just like anybody.
Nested in the relaxed atmosphere of the UES, this place seems like yet another one of those places where conversation could make you forget place and time, only to wake up several hours later satiated and exhausted from fraternal jubilance. Space is tight, but strangely, I like it that way.
As we begin to emerge from the stupor of good friends and food, my friend put the final touches on his signature hamburger - while I dawdled on the dregs of my Bloody Bull (a bloody Mary with beef broth, something a friend had recommended to me before I had ever patronized the place). We departed, and burst out into the slightly brisk but sun-warmed air, feeling more confident in our manhood, somehow.
My only gripe? Another cash-only establishment for us noble carriers of cards.
The fare is good, I don't need to tell you that. But I hope that I have been able to, in some way, illuminate the fantastic-ness of the aesthetic, and driven folks to give this establishment (and landmark) a whirl. It is truly fantastic, and a wonderful place to take up the mantle of my 50th entry. -

The original Upper East Side burger Mecca: J.G. Melon. If you can squeeze into a spot at the bar, do this, as its the best option. However, you'll be competing with regulars who will easily command the staff's attention before you. The waitstaff also ranges from surly to hilarious, a friend of mine was called a "pussybitch" after he couldn't finish his burger. Yet I usually take this in stride, ordering up a Bloody Bull while hanging out and waiting for my burger, secretly laughing at the WASPY, clubby atmosphere. The melon theme seems particularly apt, as this is the color dominating men's shorts, polos as well as women's Lily Pulitzer dresses.
Even so, they make one hell of a burger in that tiny kitchen, perfectly proportioned and intensely beefy, despite streams of grease sometimes shooting out of the tiny kitchen parallel to the bar (the same pussybitch friend caught a particular nasty grease explosion one time and got a new shirt and free burger out of it). No lettuce, just pickles and red onions to add to your cheeseburger. Here, I always add bacon for the chewy/crunchy texture, plus a swipe of Grey Poupon. This is easily one of my favorite burgers in the city. -

The Bloody Bull knocked my socks off. So flavorful and delicious. We then had burgers with chili. Chili was fantastic and the cheese was melted perfectly. The burger was perfect and loaded with cheese and bacon. Hit the spot well and I will be back soon, I hope.

My introduction to the bloody bull raises the bar here. Small burger with unoriginal thoughts, aka I can make that at home on my foreman, but I do love my homemade burgers. The second time I went I tried the chicken sandwich which is almost criminal at a great burger joint and I paid the price as the chicken sandwich was about average at best. Cottage fries are ok, but I have had better (roll n roaster in brooklyn). Worth trying if you enjoy meat. Crowded and can be a bit of a wait.

it's a great simple burger. it was cooked just the way i wanted it to be. it dribbled all over my hands, and they smelled like burger ALL day (this is kinda a good thing until you wake up the next morning and they still smell like burger). when you're craving that burger, a REAL burger with no fuss or guss, get this. it will totally satisfy your craving. ask for the L&T bc they wont give it to you unless you do. get a bloody mary or bloody bull. and if you order the chili bc ur a fatty like me, add some hot sauce to it. actually, don't get the chili at all bc it doesnt measure up to the burger. order another burger instead if one wasn't enough (as it sometimes isn't). get some of those cottage fry things, and get there a little early to beat the crowd.

Best turkey burger ever. Yum, yum, yum.
It is worth ordering a bloody bull just once, because it is a specialty, it is VERY salty (they put beef broth in it). I usually just stick to their bloody marys.
Keep your eyes peeled for open bar seats. First come first serve, and usually better service. -

I really love J G Melon. Burgers are solid but the real draw for me is the Bloody Bull. Who knew a Bloody Mary with beef juice could be so delectable? If you're not in the mood for a burger, their club sandwich is quite good.
My favorite part of the restaurant is the old school feel. Everyone that works there seems to have been there since dinosaurs roamed the earth. -

There is a lot to say about this place.
Great Burgers, Great Fries, love the "Bloody Bull" which has enough salt in it to be a sports drink for a drinker.(Bloody Mary with Beef Stock).
Always a wait but who cares have a beer and relax. This place is beyond preppy, almost a breeding ground for plaid and Argyle. It is fun to watch the crowd a bit.
Service is quick and friendly.
If you live nearby it is worth going to but I would not invest in anything over a $5 dollar cab ride. Not a date place.
