Sporting an erection at dinner can be awkward. In certain circles it may be one of the gravest faux paus, punishable by a swift Bobbit-like chop. But sporting one in front of your mother at dinner is apparently acceptable...In Brazil. At least that is what the dancer that was sitting on my lap said.
I didn't know it was Samba night at Mangarosa when I booked the rez, so every 45 minutes we were treated to one of my new favorite forms of entertainment: Half naked Brazilian women thrusting their hips like they are on fire thinking that a swift humping motion is the way to extinguish them. (okay so this isn't a new favorite, I just forgot until now)
Would I have attempted another venue had I known the onslaught of sexual depravity that accompanied my Ossobuco? No...hell no. In fact I would have even pre-purchased a lap dance for my mother if I had been aware of this erotic pairing of sex and cuisine which happens every Thursday.
Every plate of food we tried was equally and soulfully comforting. The cheese bread, puff pastries, and Espetinhos were all fantastic appetizers. I got to sample four entrees of which I cannot make a single complaint the "Frango Assado" crisp chicken with 12 year aged balsamic, tender soft beef short ribs with red bell pepper sauce and ossobuco were each as good as the next but the prawns' n a pumpkin were the highlight for me. You could serve me a used Kleenex in a pumpkin and there is a chance I am still gonna get excited when it shows up to my table.
I am not sure why pumpkins cause so much elation in me but I suspect childhood trauma. But a good kind of trauma, like your mom catching you in the shower with a samba dancer kind of trauma. If you show up on Thursday my advice to you is to have another caipirinha and keep thrusting...i mean eating. -

One of my friends at work told me I had to try this place out, especially for Dine About Town. I'm really glad I did and I think they had a really solid menu for DAT. While the area itself is always a hard place to find some parking, the restaurant wasn't crowded and it had a very cool atmosphere. While waiting for another friend to join, we had drinks at the bar. I think their happy hour time is awesome! It's hard to get back into the city after work and catch a happy hour, but 6-8 from Tues-Friday is perfect!
There were three of us and we finally sat down and got to order. I went with the Mangarosa butter salad, Calamari and the Prawn n a pumpkin. The salad was aight. It wasn't amazing or bad. It did what it was there for and just started off the meal. The calamari was a huge serving and very tasty. I'm a big calamari fan so this made me happy! The Prawns in a pumpkin was delicious. I wish there was more of it but you can't have it all.
My friends and I ended up sharing our dishes so we can pretty much try everything on the DAT menu. The cod cake was soooo good! I don't think I've had anything like that before so that was a nice surprise. Next time I go back to Mangarosa, I'm definitely going with that. The gnocchi and the beef short ribs were also very notable. The gnocchi was so soft and doughy. Not you're typical gnocchi as they were shaped like small scallops. The meat just fell off the bone for the short ribs.
In terms of a three course meal, I probably couldn't afford coming here often for that much food except when it's DAT but I'd go back for just a 1-2 dish night! -

Excellent.
Calamari Fritti- the batter was great. Calamari was mixed with bell peppers and onions, and i think sweet potatoe all fried with it. Oh and the dipping sauce- excellent. It is a little fuity but has a familiar tartar taste.
Crab Dip- very very good. Comes with parmesan crostini. Best crab and artichoke dip i have ever had
Beef Short Ribs and Bell pepper sauce- so mouth watering. Short ribs were very tender, the most tender fall off the bone ive had. and the bell pepper sauce was perfect- tangy and went well with the beef.
Pesto Mushroom and Chicken Risotto- excellent flavors all come together so well. a little bit rich, but definitly worth a try.
Yum -

SO GOOD!
My boyfriend found this place because they had a "Groupon" a week or two ago. We are new to the bay area so we try to eat out in SF roughly once a week and try new places. We both agreed this was the best place thus far. That being said, I do agree its a tad on the pricey side.. but with the Groupon we had that wasn't an issue. Also they have prixie menu on tuesday nights that looked affordable (~34 dollars).
Now to the food... we had the polenta appetizer... WOW! I have never had polenta that smooth, it was very tasty. Definitely ask for the bread too if you go, they dont bring it out automatically but it is very good. I had the pumpkin and prawns and it was fantastic, comes with rice and is sort of like brazilian curry in a gord... not a soup, but it does have a thick liquid sauce plus you can eat the edges of the pumpkin... need I say more? Also tried some of the beef short ribs with red pepper sauce... it was fall off the fork soft! For dessert, you HAVE to get the mango crem bruele with the mosscato wine pairing. Its sooo good.
I would go back tonight! Also, we had a reservation and ours was the only table open... so definitely make one! -

Don't come here on any night but Tuesday! This is when they have a three course prix frix for $30 (6-11pm). I love complete meals. And I believe they can be achieved without breaking the bank. Sadly, I was not here on a Tuesday night. So what did Wednesday have to offer? Read:
Soft beef short ribs with red bell pepper sauce - ($23) This didn't come with any sides. Actually most of the entrees don't come with any sides but when you're paying $23, couldn't they at least throw in a little green herb even just for added color? The ribs were good but didn't justify the price. The sauce was a pleasant surprise though. I think red bell peppers have a very strong after taste but it was not present in the sauce, more of an after thought of flavor.
"Prosciutto wrapped filet mignon with roasted potatoes, asparagus and Marchand de Vin sauce" - ($34) This is in quotes because the prosciutto was actually wrapped around the three stems of asparagus. Huh? No matter. The mignon/sauce was nicely cooked but the sides were boring. Roasted potatoes actually means fried potatoes. The asparagus was nothing special even with the prosciutto. Now I'm glad I didn't order a side for the ribs.
Chocolate Strawberry Bread Pudding with Hazelnut Ice Cream - ($9) It looked like a delicious dessert. It had a nice scoop of ice cream on top of the pudding and was garnished with bits of strawberries, blueberries (previously frozen), and raspberries. But the red berry syrup killed it. The taste was overwhelming every other flavor that it covered and I didn't even want the last few bites. And I never turn down dessert.
I'm sure this could have been a four star place but it was not meant to be on this night. -

Came here with two other friends on a Tuesday when they were serving their prix fixe menu. We chose this place because one friend was in the mood for creme brulee.. and she knew they served it.
Valet parking was a definite plus, even though it was our last resort. Two of us got the prix fixe and it was fairly average. The service was less than average.
One friend ordered the ravioli, and after a lengthy wait, her meal came out first. After about two minutes, our server returns, but not with the rest of our meals. She advises that our meals arent ready yet and it could be a while. Really? A restaurant that has been in business for a while should be more than aware of cooking times for different meals.
Of course, my friend wasnt going to be rude and eat her meal while we continue to be hungry with a constant eye on the kitchen. Her food continues to get cold, and then our server comes back and asks if she would like a fresh ravioli to be made. This was a nice gesture, but really, the situation shouldnt have happened in the first place.
Anyway, we end up all getting our meals (her "new" ravioli appeared strikingly similar to the first, btw...) and eating them. I had the beef short ribs with mashed potato. The mashed potatoes arrived a few minutes into my meal... which was random.. on a side plate. My meat was very nicely cooked, I cant complain about that. However, i felt the "meat and potatoes" combo was sort of missing something.
Dessert was my favorite part of the meal. We all loved ours (creme brulee, chocolate and strawberry bread pudding with hazelnut icecream, and tiramasu) and they were well priced at $9 each.
Our 18% automatic gratuity to our bill was waived (we wanted three separate tabs) because of the main meal inconvenience. This was nice. Our server then asked me if my mashed potatoes were brought out my accident with the short ribs? I was confused. She said they weren't on the menu, but I remember seeing them. Anyway, I thought that the server should know the menu a bit better.. and not expect the customer to know whether it was a mistake or not.
Overall experience: AVERAGE. Because of what a hassle it was to get there and park, I wont be going back. -

ITALY MEETS BRAZIL ON STOCKTON STREET
By Carol Peterson
MangaRosa, 1548 Stockton Street, San Francisco, CA 94133 415.956.3211
"Go ahead, order anything on the menu. It's on us tonight." This was a first. At a Tel-Hi silent auction, we had won a dinner for two at MangaRosa. Now, we have won dinners before, but never had a restaurant awarded such a generous carte blanche. So we folded ourselves into our chairs and began a magnificent meal.
When I started doing restaurant reviewing, I always kept this experience at MangaRosa in the back of my mind. Not only do I look for fabulous food in the neighborhood, but I value a community spirit and immersion into the North Beach scene, when a new restaurant joins us. So two years later we went back for dinner.
The first thing to know about MangaRosa is that it is an Italian restaurant with a difference. Renato Fusari, told me, "We are 90 percent Italian and 10 percent Brazilian." It is the 10 percent that gives MangaRosa the edge, as they infuse different herbs, limes, coconut milk and other Brazilian flavors into their food.
The meal starts with their homemade bread. The stars of the bread basket are the small round hot dinner rolls that contain a surprising dollop of a creamy melted cheese in the center.
A must is the MangaRosa butter lettuce salad, with sweet and spicy walnuts, fresh mangos, dry cherries and cambozola cheese. The combinations of crunchy, chewy and creamy all come together but it is the dressing, a unique mixture of mango, lime, mint and oil cocktail that makes this salad stand out. It left me trying to figure out which lingering flavor was assaulting my taste buds.
If you are a lover of beef, at MangaRosa you are at the right place. Here the tender beef short ribs are slow-roasted and literally melt in your mouth. They come on a platter, with a red bell pepper sauce, a rich and colorful compliment to the meat. The large portion is appropriate for sharing.
Many restaurants fall flat when they try to do a seasonal dish; not MangaRosa. The "Camarao na Moranga," or prawns in a pumpkin, shines. You are served a small pumpkin, stuffed with prawns in a sauce of coconut milk and tomato so delicious that I found myself digging into the soft flesh of the pumpkin and eating it with the remaining sauce. Chef Sergio Cruz has created a real prize here.
The elite dessert is the chocolate-strawberry bread pudding, with hazelnut ice cream. Well worth the calories.
Our third visit was on a Thursday night, and were we ever surprised. A Brazilian rum company was having a promotion and happy hour was in full swing. The place was packed. Brazilian music was playing and out came the scantily dressed dancers on the bar, in their Carnival costumes. The place had so much energy, it was easy to fall into the mood.
As we ate, the dancers came around to the table begging a dance and the rum representative came by to explain the finer points of South American rum. We ordered Caipirinhas, the official drink of Brazil. The one I was served that night was better than any I've had in Brazil. This happy hour goes on for considerably more than an hour every Thursday night.
MangaRosa has been around for quite a few years now and seems to be a fixture in the neighborhood. I'll be back for more delicious food and I hope you will put the place on your A list, too. -

I came here about a year ago because I always saw it on the Dine About Town menu, but never had a chance to try it. Though I didn't come out during DAT, I was still able to have a taste of their best dishes highly recommended by our cute waiter (who was also bartending as well).
We ordered a few drinks by the bar while we were waiting for our seat. The mojitos and caipirinhas were legit! Not too sugary with the perfect proportion of rum and club soda. I can still remember sipping on the pulps of lime...when all of a sudden...the lights go dim and I hear Brazilian tunes blasting throughout the venue, followed by 3 sexy Samba dancers dazzled up in risque outfits propped up on top of the bar. I took a glance at the crowd of roaring men with their jaws to the floor and a glass in hand and thought to myself, "this will be interesting if they start dancing with everyone." Next thing you know, the Samba dancers start roaming around the entire dining room shakin' their thang and breakin' that thang! Quite an entertaining evening, I must say.
We were finally seated in the lounge area by the bar and were too distracted by the half naked chick bouncing her goodies 3 ft away from our table to decide what to order. Our waiter, kind and helpful as ever, suggested his 4 top picks: calamari fritti, grilled prawns risotto, gnocci in a roasted garlic cream sauce, & tender soft beef short ribs. They weren't kidding when they said the short ribs are "tender soft". I barely touched it with my fork and the meat just slid off the bone. SO flavorful! I must go back for more. I especially loved the pungent garlic cream sauce that blanketed the gnocci. "Melt in your mouth delicious" is the best way to put it. The risotto and calamari were a great addition to our meal, but I wouldn't come back for them.
Overall, I was extremely satisfied with my experience at this electrifying restaurant and I'm planning to come back very soon. I hear their happy hour runs until 8pm. Did somebody say mojitos??? *wink*

This was a great first dining experience! We had dinner here for my birthday and to my surprise, there were flowers and balloons set up at our table. The hostess was really nice and sweet.
The waiter was pretty cute, too! Reminded me of Jason Lewis (Smith from "Sex and the City") haha....he had a slight Irish accent, I think?! Anyway...he was really nice. He told us what the special was for the night and brought us our waters. He was very patient when we couldn't really make up our minds about our orders. We ordered the steak special, fine and thinly sliced with mashed potatoes, beef short ribs with scalloped potatoes and started off with the scallops with speck, treviso, and calvados butter.
Our waiter and even the hostess stopped by to check on us several times throughout our dinner. I liked the atmosphere....it felt intimate, personal, and the music was nice. It was a little dark in there but you could still look the person in the eye when you're talking to them across the table. Hehe....
For dessert, we ordered the Brazilian Flan and I had the Chocolate Strawberry Bread Pudding with Hazelnut ice cream. YUM!!!! It was on the house since it was my birthday and they even gave me a huge candle. Hehhee.....
I would definitely come back! This was a great place....I think everyone should try it. -

After all the mixed reviews, I wasn't expecting much out of Mangarosa. Still, we had a $50 Restaurants.com coupon and an empty stomach. In the end, so glad we went. Our dinner was excellent.
Here's what we ordered:
- Warm Spinach Salad
- Mangarosa Salad
- Crab dip
- Fish of the day
- Beef short ribs
- Brazilian steak Réchaud
Everything was so yum. Everything! There wasn't a single dish on the table that was a regret. The highlights were definitely the beef short ribs and the Réchaud. Negative points for having to order sides separately with a main entree dish. I'd recommend getting mashed potatoes, not scalloped potatoes.
$50 off with the coupon, our bill was about $100 total. Friday night reservations were easy on opentable. Not sure why there are so many low stars. Maybe Thursday nights are much busier?
It's a great place to start off your night in North Beach. -

Mangarosa is a pretty festive place. I went here on a Saturday night and the place was packed. Fortunately, we had reservations and were seated immediately. The menu was lengthy so deciding what to eat so so hard!! Too many good sounding choices! Eventually my girl friends and I decided family style would be the best option so we could try more than 1 entree.
Here's what we had:
crab dip with artichoke, onions, grana padano and parmesan crostini 11
grilled prawns risotto 20
house made gnocchi with roasted garlic, crescenza cream sauce and local wild mushrooms 20
tender soft beef short ribs with red bell pepper sauce 23
"Pudim de Po de Chocolate e Morangos com Sorvete de Avel
Chocolate Strawberry Bread Pudding with Hazelnut Ice Cream
Yum yum yum. Everything was delicious, my favorite of the night was the gnocchi, so melt in your mouth deliciousness. Tasty. The birthday girls favorite was the risotto. Also, because we were celebrating a birthday the waitress waived the dessert from our bill. The bread pudding was enjoyable, i didn't think that I'd be into the soggy bread but it surprised me, the hazelnut topped it off.
Next time I want to order the polenta souffle! -

One of the great things about eating out with a group of friends, besides having good company, is sampling from their orders. We gathered a good-sized group of eleven together and selected this place after much deliberation over where we would take advantage of the Dine About Town deals these first two weeks of June. When gathering a large group together in the City its always tough for everyone to be at any given place at a certain time. Luckily there was a small bar and lounge seating for us where we were able to grab a few drinks and relax while waiting for members of our party to trickle into the restaurant.
The prix-fixe menus included a salad, a seafood appetizer, and entree. Since many of us ordered something different it was great to try everything on the prix-fixe menu. My favorites from our choices were the mangarosa salad, crab and artichoke dip, and the prawns n' pumpkin (very good). The beef short ribs were pretty good and although they provide you with a knife to cut it up, the meat is so tender that it literally falls off the bone and can be easily separated into manageable portions with a fork.
I think this would make a pretty decent date spot as well. Good food, nice and trendy decor although the color of the walls were more of a papaya than manga rosa (pink mango), small bar and lounge area, comfortable lighting and atmosphere, comfortable noise level, and the tables aren't too close so as to allow some privacy. -

We had a fun time at Mangarosa before walking over to Beach Blanket Babylon. We had reservations for three at 6:30pm on a Saturday evening, and upon arriving, it was pretty empty and we were seated right away. It got packed very quickly (including some fairly large parties), so reservations are highly recommended. The atmosphere is fun, even without the dancers. (But I've vowed to come back and check that out in the near future!)
Calamari was excellent! Very lightly breaded and came with an great citrus-y sauce (nice change from your typical marinara sauce.)
Entrees are $20+. I played it safe and ordered the pesto cheese ravioli, and it was very good. It was in marinara sauce, but the raviolis were topped with just enough pesto sauce. Delicious! My boyfriend ordered the pork chop but was a bit disappointed that it was breaded (not a big fan.) The beef short ribs were very well-cooked; the meat practically slid off the bone, and its red bell pepper sauce was very tastey!
I had their "sanguinella", which is their version of sangria, and it was ok--couldn't really taste any alcohol. I guess for $10, it was a good size since it really filled me up.
After the fact, I realized that we didn't get served any bread. Looking at their menu now, I see that it says "bread served upon request" at the bottom. Well, that sucks. Our server was good, friendly, helpful, but he didn't offer us any bread :(
The bill for three people (3 cocktails, 1 appetizer, 3 entrees, and a bottle of wine) came out to a little over $200. It was ok, but damnit, we didn't get any bead!!!!
So overall, it was good. Not mind-blowing (and I'm definitely planning to visit again), but good. -

Dine About Town destination number two. This place gave me come major whiplash! I walk in to meet my good buddy April at the bar. A few minutes later they start clearing the bartop. What's going on?
"You guys will need to back up. The Samba dancers are coming out to dance," say the bartender.
Damn, on the bartop? Well, it shouldn't be too different from the Samba dancers at Canto do Brasil yeah? So they come out, and it's pretty much the same deal as the other place except for this one ebony skinned woman dancing in front of me. She damned near knocked my ass outta my chair. Never seen a woman shake a bootie with such FEROCITY! Seroiusly felt some whiplash. I almost felt bad for looking.
"Damn, she was a real nice ass," says April.
Okay, I don't feel as bad anymore.
"She really knows how to shake that ass!" exclaims April.
Dude, you sound way more excited that me. Anyhow, the food was pretty good too. I actually ordered off the Dine About Town menu since it looked like they had some good selections. It was good, but I saw some other dishes that looked more interesting and exciting that I'll try the next time I'm by. I will say that my Tender Soft Beef Short Ribs with Red Bell Pepper Sauce lived up to its name (oh so soft and tender) and was very genereous in size. Sad to say it was a bit bland and lacked the kicked you would expect from Brazilian cuisine. April's Gnocchi with Roasted Garlic, Crescenza Cream Sauce and Local Wild Mushrooms was the first time I ever liked gnocchi due to the fact it was seared. Seared gnocchi, genius!
Mangarosa's very fun and casual dining with an interesting twist on Brazilian and Italian cuisine. Seared gnocchi, oh slobber. I have to try the Veal Ossobuco next. The are plenty of Brazilian inspired cocktails, but a bit too much on the sweet side. To sum it all up, Mangarosa is a great time out.
MUST HAVE: Dinner on Thursdays. That's when the Samba dancers are there to liven up an already lively atmosphere. -

Mangarosa (which means Pink Mango in Portugese - we were trying to figure that out) is now one of my favorite spots in North Beach. It was pretty empty on a Tuesday night, so we were able to enjoy our meal in peace and soak in the cool vibe of the place.
The concept of the restaurant is Italian with a Brazilian twist, which seemed intruiging. The menu consists of a variety of pastas, risottos, and meat dishes. Once I saw the tender beef short ribs, I knew that was what I was getting. When the dish arrived, I was amazed by the size of the portion - it looked just as fantastic as it tasted. The presentation was not fussy, the flavors were amazing. The meat was so tender that I didn't need a knife to cut it off the bone. Every bite was delicious!
We saved room for dessert (which is a must) and ordered the warm chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. That too, was like taking bites of heavenly goodness. They also had a mango creme brulee and fried banana dessert that I will have to try out next time. Our server was also very accomodating and friendly, and made our dinner that much more enjoyable.
