Came by for dinner the other night and managed to be seated upon arrival. Parking was plentiful on their private lot and on the street. Staff was friendly, cordial, and quite talented! ;)
Started off with the Banh Knot and it was decent, although a touch over-fried.
Moved on to the onion beef and the beef was very fragrant and flavorful. The side of vermicelli square was re-steamed and wasn't too fresh.
The canh chua catfish soup was different, quite sweet for my tastes...
The Tom Cang Kho Tau was lackluster as the prawns weren't very fresh. The seasoning was okay, although a touch on the bold side...
The morning glory was also decent with huge portions and not too oily! -

Came here for a big family lunch. EVERY single dish we ordered was super salty! Up to the point I felt like I was going to have a hypertensive crisis after finishing the meal. I rarely give bad review for restaurants but this is just too too much!
Both 2 of the soups we ordered were also super salty. The canh chua's vegetables tasted like they just put them in right before serving without being even slightly cooked. The broth was, again, salty. The other canh was also salty.
The cá kho wasn't marinated long enough. The sauce is salty yet the fish itself is tasteless.
Their beef salad was not edible because, again, TOO SALTY.
Tht kho tàu wasn't cook long enough. The meat was still very though. But yes, same problem, TOO SALTY.
I can't emphasize enough how salty everything was.
I wish I can give them zero star for food!
If you have high blood pressure already, this place will have your pressure goes up another 20 points!!!
This 1 star was for their servers as they were extremely nice and great (few glitches in in the beginning but I'm willing to overlook it)
Never again Vung Tau. You need to take a lighter hand on the salt!!! -

If you're looking for a quiet, not so loud, fancy Vietnamese restaurant then you're in the right spot! They serve traditional, high quality Vietnamese food with but with a classy twist. This place has been my go to for banh khot (mini VN pancakes) for 10+ years and the recipe has remained the same! Other items that are my go to are: Tom kho tau (prawns in roe sauce) which is freaaaaking awesome! My other go to dish every time I'm here. 2 giant prawns that's flavor packed, and they're not skimpy on the roe sauce! Ba nam sadec (Sadec noodles) usually ordered dry. It's really similar broth wise to hu tieu nam vang but comes with crab claws, shrimp, a crispy fried shrimp chip, and the infamous sautéed pork sauce that they add a whole lot of on top of the glass noodles, and I'm telling you the pork sauce makes the dish.
I've also tried their canh chua ca Bong lau (sweet&sour catfish soup) and ca kho to (caramelized catfish in clay pot) is just as good but those three are my top fav! -

I am Vietnamese and I highly recommend this Vietnamese restaurant.
Please don't be that person that comes into this restaurant, ordering a noodle soup or rice plate. I only find it acceptable if you're ordering this during a business lunch.
I only recommend this place for dinner, and it's good for a group of 4; no more, no less. Vietnamese food is meant to be shared, but the portions served here are small. You want to get a taste of everything, and therefore you should order one of each: an appetizer, salad, soup, meat or seafood dish.
I highly recommend the Banh Khot, Tom Cang Kho Tau, and Canh Chua Ca Bong Lau. -

I came to Vung Tau with a couple of coworkers recently and was blown away. One of the nicest Vietnamese restaurants I've had the pleasure of dining at.
First thing you'll have a problem with is parking. Their lot is small, so your chance of parking there is small during lunch or dinner. There are metered spots across the street, but why would you want to pay when there's free street parking half a block down? Peculiar, but it's something you have to deal with.
My coworkers tend to order too many dishes, but I'm not complaining. Who wouldn't want to try as many dishes as possible and have leftovers to take home? Especially if you're not paying!
- #7 Hu Tieu Ba Nam Sa Dec ($9.75): Tiger prawn, snow crab claw, lean pork rice noodle soup. A very popular noodle soup and one of the things this restaurant is famous for. The shrimp they use here are HUGE, plenty of pork slices, and the crab craw is as sweet as can be. The broth is delicious and the noodles intertwine everything together perfectly.
- #34 Banh Khot ($8.95): Crispy shrimp "cupcakes" made of coconut milk flour and ground shrimp. Vung Tau's specialty and what brings them so much notoriety. The delicate flavor in these is purely mindblowing. When paired with the fish sauce and a little bit of fresh lettuce, you will be sent to heaven. Banh khot are conveniently bite sized so they're bound to be the first thing to disappear from the table. You have to try it to experience the wonder.
- #36 Tom Qua Tien ($8.95): Pretty typical shrimp wrapped in a crunchy dough layer. Nothing too special and not too overfried.
- #49 Bo Cuon Hanh Huong ($16.50): Grilled onion beef rolls. You have the blissful combination of sweet crunchy onions with savory chewy beef. Together, the flavors are on a whole other level. Not too great when reheated the next day, but fantastic nonetheless.
- #52 Khit Kho Tau Dua Gia ($15.50): Slow cooked pork belly, whole egg. Although pork belly is mostly fat, it still carries a lot of flavor with it. Although I didn't eat much of this, the slice that I did have was nice and sweet.
- #60 Ca Bong Lau ($14.50): Caramelized catfish. I don't know if it's the garlic or the fish sauce, but the flavors here are awesome. Even though we finished the dish, I had to ask for a container for the sauce because it was that great. The fish itself is incredibly tender and flavorful. A must.
Service is on point and dishes come out quickly. Tea refills might take a while. The shape of the restaurant might leave you ignored if you sit near the entrance, so make sure to get a table in the back.
If you're tired of the everyday pho, vermicelli, and rice dishes, Vung Tau is a perfect escape. -

The foods were ridiculously overpriced with very little amount of foods. We ordered "Tom cang kho tau" for $19.00 and there were only 2 shrimps, and they were not jumbo size. The "Suon heo kho to" was too chewy. Quality of foods was so so...I had better at many other places. Never come back again, and do not reccommend to anyone.

Does good authentic tasting Vietnamese Food complemented with superior customer service and finally caked with a modern clean atmosphere even exist in San Jose?
Amazingly Yes! Aside from Xanh in Mountain View, Vung Tau is probably the only other Vietnamese restaurant around with the above described.
Now before I begin, Vung Tau is pretty expensive when compared to other viet places, with most a la carte menu items averaging 15 dollars each. The individual dishes will come close to 10 dollars and there aren't any appetizers that you can get for under 7.50. If you're looking for a cheap eat and you choose this place, oh gosh, you'll be in for quite a shock!
Price Aside, the food is delicious, probably the best in terms of presentation and authenticity. By far the best individual dish is the Hu Tieu Ba Nam Sa Dec KHO. It is basically rice noodle or clear glass noodle (you pick) with pork loin meat, crab meat, shrimp, rice cracker, and topped off with a fat scoop of shrimp/pork tomato paste sauce (which is the most delicious thing ever)! Their Can Chua is the best in San Jose, it has a perfect balance between sweet and sour.
If this is your first time, here are some suggested dishes to impress yourself, your date, or family.
Appetizers:
Bo Bia (A Spring Roll with Chinese Sausage, egg, and pickled veggies served with warm peanut sauce. This is very very good and definitely needed!
Banh Khot- Fried coconut based cake with whole and dried shrimp flakes topped with stewed green onion served with lettuce and fish sauce. Your supposed to place 1 bank knot in a leaf of lettuce, roll it up, and dip in the fish sauce. Its yummy and refreshing!
Main Course:
Canh Chua Ca Bong Lau. They might ask you if you want to upgrade to Sea Bass but its not worth the extra 6 dollars. The catfish will suffice.
Heo Kho Tho- Sliced Grilled Pork stewed with garlic.
(If your rich) Tom Cang Kho Tau (Stewed Water Prawns). This is a pricey dish at 20 dollars for 2-3 giant prawns. If you have money to burn get this, its very tasty on the tastebuds.
Hu Tieu Ba Nam Sadec KHO. DO NOT GET THIS WET!!! When you get it wet they don't give you the scoop of tomato paste which is the why this dish stands out from other vietnamese places. Get it Dry!
Drinks:
All their drinks are good but, surprise! Pricey .-.
If you do want a drink, get the thai tea or hot tea. They serve the hot tea in a old fashioned tea kettle thats really cute!
Come here to see what Vietnamese Cuisine has to offer.
Random Facts:
-Remodeled to a more modern and classy looking store.
-Parking is abundant as they have their own parking lot
-The free water they served is purified water. -

I just came here to eat last week for my grandma's birthday... my first time at this location.
Since my bf and I didn't feel all that hungry, we shared the Tom Kho Tau. I get that the restaurant is nice... but $20 for 2 prawns with some rice and veggies is pretty ridiculous to me. Granted it was good, I didn't feel it was justified... probably because I could spend about $30 to make enough of the same dish for 5 people.
Other than that, I also had a taste of the egg rolls, which were good as well (that's pretty hard to mess up, esp with fish sauce).
I think the main thing that got me is that the service really is good... one of my brothers, who is in a wheelchair, was helped to the bathroom by a server so he could wash his hands.
I probably wouldn't come back unless someone wanted to. -

VUNG TAU is one of my favorite Vietnamese Restaurants.
Why? Because mostly everything here is good! Yes, it is on the pricier side when it comes to Vietnamese food, but it is worth every minute. It's more like Vietnamese fine dining. The restaurant remodeled several times and it just keeps looking better :)
Here are some of my favorite dishes that you should order:
LUNCH MENU
BUN CHA HA NOI - grilled skewered pork with rice noodles
COM BO BIT TET - French style NY steak with tomato rice and salad
COM BO LUC LAC -shaking beef with tomato rice and salad
COM TOM CANG KHO TAU - jumbo water prawns ** this one is a must. the BEST here! my favorite!
DINNER MENU
Appetizers: Banh Khot (crispy shrimp cupcakes) or CHA GIO (egg rolls) or GOI CUON (spring rolls)
CANH CHUA - tamarin base soup
BO LUC LAC, TOM CANG KHO TAU, SUON RIM MAN (pork ribs simmered in fish sauce & garlic) -

I love this place! I even remember before it was remodeled 10 years ago!
First, I love Vung Tau, that's the city my parents were from =)
It is one of the pricier Vietnamese place, but it is good!
Here's a list of some of my favorites
Appetizers: Banh Khot (VIetnamese cupcakes)
Spring rolls
Main dish _ TRY THE STEAK with red rice!! (bo bit tet) it is the best. The complimentary salad dressing is a must try too!!
I also like the Tom cang kho Tau or the Tom rang me. They are both very good.
Dessert - get the combo che!! -

I have absolutely no complaints here (except that I wish their location was closer to where I live (Mountain View/Palo Alto/Sunnyvale area).
This is not your typical Vietnamese Pho restaurant that you see in almost every city in the SF bay area. This place offers many traditional Vietnamese cuisines and everything I've tried here so far has always been pretty amazing in taste, quality, and presentation. Yes, this place is pricer than in most Vietnamese restaurants in the area, but in comparison to the high end Vietnamese restaurants in San Francisco, this place is worth every penny.
Recommendations:
1) Appetizers: Banh Khot (crip rice flower cakes served with greens and a dipping sauce) and the Cha Gio (eggrolls). YUM. The outside of the both the cake and egg rolls is perfectly fried. They can be eaten plain or wrapped up in lettuce and herbs than dipped into the sauce.
2) Noodle Soup (Hu Tieu): Ba Nam Sadec (w/ jumbo prawns, crap, & lean pork loin). OK, so if you're a crab lover, just note that you only get one craw in this noodle soup bowl but the broth is quite tasty without being to heavy or salty (like in some of the hole-in-the wall places for Hu Tieu).
3) Shrimp (Tom): Tom Cang Kho Tau (Jumbo water prawns simmered w/ garlic & onion reduction). When I have a salt craving, I make sure that every drop from the rich sauce makes it to my plate w/ my rice....soooooo GOOD! Otherwise this can be quite the dainty dish to savor as the flavor is pretty intense. A little goes a long way w/ your rice on the side.
I've never made reservations here but if you want to avoid problems with parking, waiting, and big crowds, I would come here during a weekday or week night. -

I've been eating here for years, and not a single time, my "ba nam Sa Dec" hu tieu taseted differently. The shrimp and crab have been always the same good quality. Banh khow is my other favourite dish. Oh, com bo luc lac is also good... All right, I like many dishes here... except "com tom cang kho tau"... uh-oh, not as good, and plus it's expensive.
I like the decoration here. One of the best Vietnamese restaurants. Highly recommended! -

I remember coming to this restaurant as a kid and then I've watched it transform to something even greater than it was before. Yes, the prices have went up but I wouldn't mind paying the extra couple bucks for the ambiance. This is the nicest Vung Tau location, and it's not just an opinion, it's an actual fact. I've lost count of the items that I've tried, but neither one thing off their menu has yet to disappoint me. My favorite has got to be their tom kho tau. You were always see this dish at our table when we dine here.
Whenever friends or coworkers are interested in trying out Vietnamese food, I always recommend them to Vung Tau. I was actually born in Vung Tau, so extraaaaa points for making the name of my birthplace even more wonderful!! -

The food is yummy and there's a wide variety on the menu. Drinks are a tad overpriced, but everything else is great. It's clean and the lighting is good. It's not pricey and I love the chicken feet, jellyfish salad ! The lotus root salad with shrimp and pork is also very good. The eggrolls here are done a little differently than your typical eggroll. The wrapping of the eggroll is a different wrapping and a lot crispier, which I prefer. They're fatter and also hot when they come out. I have tried many entrees here after having gone so many times:
-rice with shrimp (com tom cang kho tau)
-rice noodle with shredded pork, coconut milk, and fish sauce (banh tam bi)
-tamarind shrimp (tom me)
-rice in a clay pot
-Thai sour soup (canh chua)
-shaking beef with rice (com bo luc lac)
-noodles with BBQ shrimp and pork (banh hoi)
-rice plate with shredded pork, BBQ shrimp and egg loaf (com tam bi tom)
-rice cups filled with shrimp (banh khoc)
-noodles with BBQ beef (bun thit nuong)
-yellow curry with chicken
-sauteed water spinach with beef
-fried calamari
Needless to say, the menu is extremely large and more often than not caters to just about everyone's tastes. Everything I have ever eaten here has been great, hence the reason I keep coming back. The prices are decent, nothing spectacularly cheap or unreasonably expensive. This place can be casual or semi-formal, it's really up to you. Everything is clean and the service is great. The staff are very friendly and the food comes out in a timely manner. Definitely one of my usual places to eat. -
4.5 Stars
Returned to Vung Tau for dinner and was able to sample a selection of items that were highly recommended and I had not tried before.
Bottom line: the food here is fantastic and if there's any criticism, it's that some dishes are rather small portioned for the prices. Lunch is perhaps the better deal, but you can't go wrong with dinner either.
Our winning selections (I'll list the menu names so they are easy to find):
#5 Banh Khot - a new and novel appetizer dish consisting of crispy rice flour cakes deep fried and filled with shrimp and scallions. It came out piping hot and was amazing. Crispy on the outside and rich and flavorful and soft on the inside. Vung Tau is noted to have the top preparation of this dish anywhere and it's worth a try. ($8.25)
#63 Com Bo Luc Lac - Vung Tau's preparation of the classic Shaking Beef dish. Tasty and tender cubes of steak that had good flavor. But I'm still dreaming of the superior preparation at Newport Seafood in SoCal that had a much larger portion and was even more flavorful. Good, but not a standout dish. ($15.50)
#90 Ca Tuyet Co To - sea bass caramelized with garlic and fish sauce. Love the depth of flavor with this dish. One spoon of this sauce could be enough for two bowls of white rice. Disappointed though by the essentially single slice of sea bass though. I often opt for the catfish version (which tastes very similar for those who don't mind catfish) and is less expensive. ($16.50)
#115 Tom The Rang Me - this is Vung Tau's signature dish. Large tiger prawns served with tamarind sauce. Although pricey, the portion size is excellent with 8 large tiger prawns. The sauce, as often mentioned, is divine. Also goes very well with white rice. To be honest, I'm actually a bigger fan of the caramelized garlic, onion, and fish sauce version of this dish (#117 Tom The Rim Man) whose sauce is even better than the tamarind sauce. Same price too. If you have two people, a good alternative is #114 Tom Cang Kho Tau, which uses the very similar jumbo water prawns, the same caramelized garlic sauce but only has two prawns. I always order it for two and tt's half the price of the Tamarind Tiger Prawns ($29.50)
Overall, an excellent dinner and absolutely one of the best Vietnamese restaurants in Northern California. With the redecorated classy interior of a few years back, their consistent menu, and amazing flavors, Vung Tau is a winner. My only complaint is that I always want more of each entree (esp the smaller portioned ones) BUT that is never a bad thing.

Great place for Vietnamese! Took a friend here before she went to class at SJSU. I did not care for the decor, but service was friendly.
I love the fresh taste and portions you get here, worth the cost. We had Tra Thai, Cuon Gio, Chua Tom Viet, Ca Tuyet Kho To Cang Kho Tau. Basically all the dishes were very good. Family run business, check the history of this place on the website. Featured on public television too. I highly recommend this place. -

This place is a bit more upscale which appeals to more Americanized customers. The food though is still pretty authentic. It's definitely a place you want to take your friends to impress them and to let them experience Vietnamese food---not just pho! The modern decor reflects the higher prices though.
You must order the egg rolls. The best i've ever had! i don't know how they get it so crispy. Another must is the Hu Tieu Ba Nam Sa Dec. It is so delicious! Other great dishes are the Banh Khot (Crispy rice flour cupcakes, Bun Cha (Rice noodles w/ grilled skewered pork), Ech Chien Bo (Frog legs sauteed w/ Butter), Muc Rang Muoi (Breaded Calamari), and Tom Cang Kho Tau (Jumbo prawns simmered with garlic/onions reduction). It is delicious but a bit overpriced for the amount of food you get.
Overall, Vung Tau is a MUST EAT in San Jose! I've since moved from SJ but this is one of the restaurants I really miss. -

I almost forgot how much I like the food at Vung Tau. It was over half a year since I last ate there. I have been to Vung Tau numerous occasions including couple times before the restaurant was remodeled. It used to be more like a family restaurant but now it is all classy and elegant.
Their menu is huge. There are over a hundred items on it and I am sure if I have even tried 20% of the stuff on there.
These are some of the dishes that I really like
#05 Banh Khot (4/5 Stars) - Delicious little fried shrimp cakes (or cupcakes as they call it) wrapped in lettuce, mint and basil. Fried to perfection with a nice and soft texture. Could use a little more shrimp meat I guess but already pretty nice as is.
#63 Com Bo Luc Lac (5/5 Stars) - Tender cubed steak with refreshing seasoning. A classic shaking beef recipe done perfectly.
#83 Thit Kho Tau Dua Gia (5/5 Stars) - It was my first time ordering this dish yesterday and I was thrilled. Very tender and super flavorful slow cook pork. The meat just fall off the bones and you can basically eat it with your fork. Even the egg that comes with the pork was well seasoned. Must have been cooked for a really long time to get that texture and taste. A little on the sweet side but excellent nonetheless.
#90 Ca Tuyet Kho To (4/5 Stars) - Sea bass was soft and moist with delicious flavors from the fish sauce seasoning.
#115 Tom The Rang Me (4/5 Stars) - Very tasty taramind sauce. Tiger prawns were quite fresh but a bit on the tough side.
Did I tell you I really really like this restaurant? Not a big fan of their dessert though. I guess shaved ice is just not my thing. -

The food was okay. Not a real WOW-Factor for me unfortunately. I am from the east bay and my favorite Vietnamese restaurant is Le Cheval in Oakland, therefore I compare EVERY Vietnamese restaurant to Le Cheval. I ordered Tôm Càng Kho Tàu and my sister ordered the Com Bo Luc Luc. The Tôm Càng Kho Tàu was okay. It came with 3 big jumbo prawns for $15.95 which I thought it was a bit over priced. Presentation was nice but not the price. The Com Bo Luc Luc was okay as well but I think Le Cheval has better beef cube steak. I'll come back here again if I don't have cash to go to a hole in the wall Vietnamese restaurant in SJ and hole in the wall places are the BEST!

When you take everything into consideration, Vung Tau really is "as good as it gets" when it comes to Vietnamese food in San Jose. I've eaten here on numerous occasions, and as much as I'd like to branch out and try new things on the menu, there's just no way I can pass up any of my favorite dishes:
- Bánh Khot appetizer (Crisp rice flour cupcakes w/ shrimp)
- Tôm Càng Kho Tàu (Jumbo prawns in a garlic/onion reduction)
- Cá Tuyêt Kho Tô (Sea bass claypot)
- Bò Lúc Lác (Cubed steak pan seared with garlic/onions)
Be sure to get yourself a large order of steamed rice so you can savor every last drop of the delicious sauces that accompany each dish. If you're not accustomed to eating Vietnamese food, you probably want to steer clear of the "Canh Chua" (Tamarind soups). It's a slightly sour-tasting soup that just isn't for everyone. Overall, Vung Tau rates a solid 4.5 stars in my book, and I'm already looking forward to my next meal there!
